shopping1In the town centre you’ll find all kinds of shops. From the typical department stores to small, unique boutiques. You can find most of the things you’ll ever want to buy in the town centre. Opening hours are usually from 9.00 a.m. till 6.00 p.m. but on Mondays most shops don’t open until 1 p.m. Thursday night is “koopavond”, most of the shops are opened until 9 p.m..



V&D
V&D is a big department store that you’ll find in basically any Dutch town. They sell all kinds of stuff; from cd’s and DVD’s till plates, clothing and holidays. You can find V&D right in the middle of the town centre, across the street at the Waag.

HEMA
HEMA is a store that only sells products of their own brand. HEMA stands for “Hollandse Eenheidsprijzen Maatschappij Amsterdam“, meaning something like Dutch Uniform prices Corporation of Amsterdam. HEMA can also be found in any major town in the Netherlands. They sell stuff like sheets, pots & pans, clothing, food, bicycle locks & lights and lots of other useful stuff. They are famous for their “rookworst”, a typical Dutch sausage which you should definitely give a try!

H&M
H&M can be found all over the world so nothing more to add to that.

C&A
C&A is a store that sells all kinds of clothing, found all over Europe.
Address: Nieuwestad 98.

Blokker
Blokker sells domestic articles.
Address: Wirdumerdijk 9-11.

Xenos
If you’re looking for cheap domestic articles or food, take a look at Xenos.
Addresses: Ruiterskwartier 135a and De Centrale 6.

Christine le Duc
If you are planning an exciting night with sexy suits or kinky toys, go to Christine le Duc. Address: Over de Kelders 22

Bakker Bart
Bakker Bart sells all kinds of bread, with or without toppings.
Address: Wirdumerdijk 5.

Media Markt
Media Markt is Europe’s biggest electronic store. They sell consumer electronics, cd’s/DVD’s and computer games.

Frappant
Frappant is a small gift shop that sells a lot of original and fun items.
Address: Sint Jacobsstraat 9.

Ny-Na
Ny-Na is also a small gift shop, selling mainly oriental gifts.

Maxx
Maxx is a shop that sells all kinds of crap that other shops couldn’t sell. They are very cheap and the assortment changes constantly. If you are looking for fun or useful stuff that doesn’t cost much, try Maxx.

Douglas
Douglas is one of the biggest perfume stores in Leeuwarden, so if you want to impress someone or just enjoy a nice new perfume, you should go here.
