Sailing
A number of important routes for aquatic sports meet in Leeuwarden. From the north the Dokkumer Ie enters Leeuwarden, and from the southeast the Staandemastroute, currently in development. From the southwestern side Leeuwarden is opened up by water by the Middelseerûte, connecting the city with the Kleiweidegebied, and through Sneek with the lake district in the southwest.
